Ashura Observed with Solemnity Across Pakistan
The 10th of Muharram, Ashura, is being commemorated throughout the nation today with religious fervor and solemn observance. This day honors the supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his devoted followers in Karbala.
Ashura symbolizes the unwavering fortitude of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) grandson, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), alongside his family and loyal companions, who stood firm in defense of Islam against adversity and injustice.
Mourning processions are being conducted in cities and towns nationwide, with participants engaging in customary mourning rituals to mark Ashura.
Stringent security measures have been implemented nationwide to avert potential incidents and safeguard the processions.
Earlier, the Interior Ministry sanctioned the deployment of the Pakistan Army and civil armed forces (CAFs) across the country to reinforce security during Muharram.
Mobile phone and internet services are temporarily suspended in several cities as part of the enhanced security protocols.
In Karachi, the main procession commenced from Nishtar Park following all-night Majalis on the 9th of Muharram.
The procession will proceed along its designated route, concluding at Bargah Hussainian Iranian Kaharadar this evening, marking Sham-e-Ghareeban.
Pillion riding has been prohibited in the city as part of the security plan.
MA Jinnah Road remains closed to traffic. Businesses and markets in areas such as Saddar, Empress Market, and Regal Market have been sealed off to ensure comprehensive security along the procession route.
In Lahore, the primary mourning procession began at Nisar Haveli in Mochi Gate and will conclude at Karbala Gaamay Shah in the evening with Shaam-e-Ghareeban.
The primary “Zuljanah” procession commenced from Imam Bargah Colonel Maqbool Hussain and will conclude at Qadeemi Imam Bargah after the Maghrib prayers.
Under the directives of Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Engineer Aamir Khattak, approximately 5,500 police personnel have been deployed across Rawalpindi to maintain order.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in their messages for the 10th of Muharram, lauded the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions. They stated that Ashura imparts a message of sacrifice, integrity, resolute determination, and upholding truth.
President Zardari urged the nation to emulate Imam Hussain (RA)’s example, promoting self-improvement and grounding governance, social norms, and national priorities in honesty and public service.
He emphasized that Ashura is an enduring reminder of the struggle against falsehood and the importance of standing firm on principles.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called upon the nation to draw inspiration from Imam Hussain (RA)’s life to overcome challenges and advance Pakistan towards peace, unity, and progress.
He noted that the events of Karbala offer a timeless lesson in patience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to principles, which will continue to resonate with humanity.
The prime minister stressed the need to embody virtues such as honesty, tolerance, and principled conduct in national life, guiding the nation towards becoming a welfare-oriented, equitable, and self-reliant state.
