Sindh Government Prepares for Monsoon Rains in Karachi

In anticipation of forthcoming monsoon rains, the Sindh government has nixed local government holidays and implemented emergency response protocols in Karachi. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has indicated the potential for thundercloud development over the metropolis later today.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that to facilitate swift water drainage in susceptible areas, local government holidays have been rescinded, and comprehensive preparations have been undertaken.

He affirmed that dewatering pumps are strategically positioned in low-lying areas to address potential water accumulation. Memon added that a dedicated Rain Emergency Centre is now operational around the clock to monitor and respond to the situation.

The PMD suggests a likelihood of light showers in Karachi today, with a more substantial spell anticipated on Sunday. Furthermore, the meteorological agency highlighted the possibility of another monsoon system impacting Sindh towards the month’s end.

Forecasters had previously indicated that rainfall could occur in Karachi between July 19 and 21, with thunderclouds expected to materialize around the city by Saturday afternoon or evening.

The weather system responsible for the anticipated rainfall is currently situated over southwestern Uttar Pradesh, India, and is progressing towards Rajasthan. Experts predict that this system may influence regions of Sindh, including Karachi, potentially starting Friday night.

Should the system maintain its westward trajectory, it could precipitate significant rainfall across numerous Sindh districts. However, current projections suggest moderate rain for Karachi. Meteorologists are diligently observing the system’s path and its prospective repercussions for southern Pakistan in the coming days.

The PMD had initially predicted rain and thunderstorms for Karachi beginning Saturday, coinciding with the influx of monsoon winds into much of Sindh.

The weather system is forecast to cause broader rainfall on July 19, with thunderstorms anticipated in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, and Hyderabad. Rainfall is also expected in Tando Muhammad Khan, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, and Sujawal.
