Starc Calls Time on T20I Career
MELBOURNE: Mitchell Starc, the seasoned Australian pace bowler, declared his departure from T20 Internationals on Tuesday, opting to channel his focus towards Test and ODI formats as he aims for further achievements.
Throughout his 65 T20I appearances, Starc captured 79 wickets, positioning him as Australia’s second-most prolific wicket-taker in this format, trailing only Adam Zampa, highlighting his significant influence on the team.
Starc stated, “Test cricket holds paramount importance for me, now and always.”
“I’ve cherished every moment of playing T20 cricket for Australia, especially the 2021 World Cup. Our triumph and the camaraderie within the squad made it unforgettable.”
“Considering an upcoming Test tour in India, the Ashes series, and the 2027 ODI World Cup, I believe this decision is the optimal way for me to maintain peak fitness and readiness for those challenges.”
“This choice also allows the bowling unit ample time to prepare for the T20 World Cup, with sufficient matches leading up to the tournament.”
Following Starc’s announcement, selectors revealed the squad for the forthcoming New Zealand series on Tuesday.
George Bailey, Chair of national selectors, remarked, “Mitch has every reason to be proud of his T20I journey with Australia. He played a vital role in the 2021 World Cup victory, consistently showcasing his ability to swing games with his impressive wicket-taking prowess across all formats.”
“We will appropriately recognize and celebrate his T20I career in due course, but we are pleased that he remains dedicated to Test and ODI cricket for as long as possible.”
Cricket Australia CEO, Todd Greenberg, commended Starc’s T20I career and his choice to prioritize Test and ODI cricket in the coming years.
“It’s crucial for Mitch at this juncture of his career to make choices that enable him to prolong his involvement in Test and ODI cricket, and we wholeheartedly support his decision,” he affirmed.
