Masood Considers Three Spinners to Leverage Conditions in Series Opener

LAHORE: Pakistan’s captain, Shan Masood, acknowledged the significant opportunity presented by facing reigning champions South Africa in their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign opener, emphasizing the positive impact it could have on the team’s morale.

During the previous WTC cycle, the Green Shirts encountered a challenging journey, finishing at the bottom of the nine-team competition with only five victories in 14 matches. In contrast, South Africa triumphed over then-champions Australia to claim the prestigious mace.

Following the WTC 2023-25, Pakistan aims for another shot at the mace, commencing their campaign with a demanding two-match home series against the defending champions, which begins on Sunday.

During the pre-match press conference held at the Gaddafi Stadium, the Pakistan captain addressed questions regarding how the team plans to close the gap with the current champions.

Masood emphasized that the upcoming series against South Africa provides a crucial opportunity for a revitalized Pakistan, and achieving favorable results against them would significantly boost their confidence throughout the remainder of the WTC cycle.

Masood stated, “This is a valuable opportunity for us as we begin our campaign against the top team. It will serve as a benchmark for our progress.”

He further added, “Facing the champions, South Africa, and securing positive outcomes with the support of Almighty Allah, will undoubtedly elevate our confidence. There couldn’t be a more opportune moment for the Pakistan team than this.”

It’s worth noting that Pakistan has been favoring spin-friendly pitches at home since their comeback victory against England last year. The upcoming series in Lahore and Rawalpindi is anticipated to be played under similar conditions. Captain Masood supported this strategy, asserting that securing 20 wickets in a match, rather than accumulating massive scores, is crucial for achieving desired outcomes.

Masood explained, “If both teams manage to score 600 runs on a flat wicket, it won’t be advantageous for us.”

“At times, you compromise on runs to create opportunities for taking 20 wickets.”

The Pakistan captain also addressed concerns about the availability of right-arm spinner Sajid Khan, who is currently recovering from a viral fever. He mentioned that the final decision regarding his selection would be made after consulting with the medical staff.

Shan Masood hinted at potential adjustments to Pakistan’s lineup for the Test series opener, depending on the conditions, including the possibility of including three spinners in the team.

“Observing the pitch tomorrow, we might consider playing three spinners and one fast bowler.”
