Punjab CM Assesses Flood Situation in Ravi River

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif of Punjab undertook a visit to the Ravi River on Thursday to evaluate the current flood conditions.

The Chief Minister conducted an on-site inspection of the flood situation at Shahdara in River Ravi via boat.

Speaking to the media following her visit to Shahdara, she noted that Punjab has faced substantial and ongoing rainfall in recent weeks, resulting in critical water levels in the three main rivers.

“The volume of water in the Ravi River is unprecedented. Our rivers experienced considerable pressure. The consequences could have been devastating without timely preparations by the Punjab government.”

She lauded the local administration and rescue teams for their work, highlighting that no lives were lost due to administrative shortcomings.

She stated that more than 50,000 residents and a significant number of livestock were moved to safer locations.

Reaffirming her administration’s dedication to relief and recovery efforts, the Chief Minister pledged that her government would support every affected person and guarantee compensation for damages.

“Water is beneficial; however, we remain at risk without appropriate storage systems and drainage planning. I have instructed all departments to propose specific plans for conserving and managing floodwater in the future,” she added.

Meanwhile, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb reported that the ongoing floods have caused at least 12 fatalities in the province.

In her address to the media, she clarified that no deaths resulted from negligence on the part of the Punjab government or rescue services, adding that boat-based rescue operations are actively in progress.

She further mentioned that monitoring is underway and approximately six to seven individuals have been extracted from debris.

“Food is being distributed at relief centers, and almost 200,000 farm animals have been safely relocated with their owners. Residents are advised to stay away from flood zones and not to approach waterways for selfies or pictures,” she added.

The Senior Minister expressed gratitude for the unrelenting efforts of rescue and administrative teams, mentioning that several personnel have been working without rest for extended periods.

She also acknowledged media support and the presence of elected officials and ministers in the impacted areas.
