Manchester City Re-Signs Goalkeeper James Trafford

Manchester City has reportedly reached an agreement to re-acquire Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford for £27 million, two years after he initially departed the club, according to reports.

The 22-year-old, a product of City’s academy, is expected to sign a five-year deal, including an option for an additional 12 months.

Trafford had previously moved to Burnley in July 2023, in a transfer valued at £19 million.

Newcastle United also presented a £27 million offer for Trafford, allegedly proposing Martin Dúbravka as part of the arrangement.

However, Manchester City possessed a buy-back clause and matching rights for Trafford. They exercised these rights to match Newcastle’s bid, leading to Trafford’s decision to rejoin Pep Guardiola’s squad.

His impressive performances last season were crucial in helping Scott Parker’s team secure promotion to the Premier League, with 29 saves in 45 Championship matches. He was subsequently named in the league’s team of the year.

Upon his return, Trafford will join Ederson, Stefan Ortega, and Marcus Bettinelli as goalkeeping options under manager Pep Guardiola.

Trafford is expected to compete with Ederson for the primary goalkeeper position.

Ederson, City’s first-choice goalkeeper for the past eight years, has one year remaining on his contract. Despite being linked with a move to Galatasaray, he dismissed these rumors last month as “99% fake news.”

While City has not received any offers for the 31-year-old Ederson, there is speculation that Ortega may be transferred.

Trafford initially joined City’s academy in 2015 but did not have the opportunity to play for the first team, leading to loan spells with Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers.
