Another Building in Karachi’s Lyari Deemed Unsafe
Following the recent collapse of a residential building in Karachi’s Lyari vicinity, another multi-story structure in the same locality has been declared “unsafe.” This determination has led authorities to issue immediate evacuation directives on Sunday.
This action follows an inspection by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and local administration of a building situated in Lyari’s Agra Tag area, prompted by reports of visible fissures in the ten-unit residential complex.
This situation arises after a five-story building collapse in the same Lyari area of District South resulted in at least 27 fatalities, triggering widespread condemnation regarding unauthorized construction practices.
According to the Sindh Building Control Authority, a significant number of the buildings deemed unsafe for occupancy within Karachi, specifically 456 out of 578, are situated within District South.
An internal report by the SBCA highlights a concerning situation in densely populated zones such as Lyari and the Old City Area, identifying 107 structures as hazardous. Other districts are also at risk, with District Central having 66, Keamari 23, Korangi 14, East 13, Malir 4, and West 2 such buildings.
In Agra Taj, law enforcement and officials initially met resistance from residents who declined to leave the premises “under any conditions.”
Residents’ Concerns
- “Where were the authorities during the building’s construction phase?” residents questioned.
- They demanded provision of alternative housing prior to any evacuation.
- “We reside in this building and perceive no danger,” stated one resident.
The local administration responded by pledging appropriate compensation from the builder to the impacted inhabitants.
The District South deputy commissioner communicated, “We have proposed moving affected inhabitants to a school,” while urging residents to leave the deteriorating structure.
The official noted that the responsible builder had been contacted and assured that suitable actions would be initiated and ensure reimbursement to the residents.
Authorities, in their attempts to persuade residents to evacuate the building, proceeded to dismantle the rooftop water tank.
According to police sources, a case implicating the builder and contractor has been filed at Kalri Police Station based on a complaint lodged by the SBCA assistant director.
