Earthquake Prediction: No Technology Exists, Says Chief Meteorologist

Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari stated on Wednesday that predicting earthquakes is not possible with current technology, thereby dismissing speculations about upcoming high-intensity tremors.

In a released statement, Laghari noted, “Historically, Karachi has experienced earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.5 and 5.8.”

He further explained that minor seismic events are occurring due to activity along the Landhi fault line, which is currently undergoing a realignment.

Laghari added that countless earthquakes of similar magnitude happen worldwide on a daily basis.

The PMD chief also clarified that even in advanced nations such as Japan, ordinary citizens cannot accurately forecast seismic occurrences.

The city of Karachi felt three additional earthquakes last night, with magnitudes between 2 and 3.1, marking the fourth straight day of such occurrences.

The PMD’s Seismic Monitoring Centre reported that the latest events have brought the total number of tremors felt in Karachi to 26 since June 1.

Since Sunday, several mild tremors have been felt in Karachi’s Landhi, Quaidabad, Malir, and nearby areas, leading to increased apprehension among residents. To date, there have been no reports of significant destruction or casualties.
