Oval Curator in the Spotlight After Test Match Drama

LONDON: Lee Fortis, the Oval’s pitch curator, became a focal point after a disagreement with India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, prior to the fifth Test.

Initially portrayed unfavorably by Indian media, Fortis garnered praise for producing what many considered the finest pitch of the series. This set the scene for a gripping conclusion where India secured a thrilling victory, drawing the series level at 2-2.

Following a run-in with the Indian team management, Fortis faced widespread criticism. However, the narrative changed swiftly as his expertly prepared surface facilitated a captivating contest.

Speaking after the game, a visibly pleased Fortis stated that he never regarded himself as the antagonist.

“I was never the villain; that image was created. I trust everyone appreciated the spectacle. The atmosphere was electric—reminiscent of the IPL. It was a superb game,” Fortis remarked.

The controversy began when Fortis reportedly requested Gambhir and India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, to keep a distance of 2.5 meters from the pitch during an inspection.

Tensions rose when he also instructed the support staff not to bring a cooler onto the field—a directive that visibly irritated Gambhir.

Addressing the pitch inspection controversy, Kotak offered his viewpoint, highlighting the unexpected limitations enforced by the ground staff.

“When we went to inspect the pitch, we were instructed to remain 2.5 meters away. This was quite surprising, given the Test was still several days away and we were simply wearing joggers,” he explained.

“We have extensive experience around cricket grounds. While curators are understandably protective of their pitches, they should also appreciate that they are interacting with knowledgeable and seasoned professionals,” he added.

Despite the off-field tensions, the fifth Test lived up to expectations. England, pursuing a challenging target of 374, appeared to be in command at 301-3 with Harry Brook and Joe Root performing strongly.

However, after India broke their partnership, the match experienced a dramatic shift.

The pitch, which provided opportunities for both sides, enabled India to stage a late resurgence. England’s batting faltered under pressure, and the hosts narrowly missed their target—losing by a mere six runs.
