LAHORE:
A powerful wave of torrential rainfall struck Lahore on Tuesday, leaving at least 10 people dead and dozens injured. The relentless downpour caused severe urban flooding, paralyzing daily life and damaging infrastructure across the provincial capital.
Low-lying areas were submerged as drainage systems failed to cope with the intense rainfall. Roads turned into rivers, vehicles broke down mid-traffic, and residents were seen wading through knee-deep water in several localities.
According to rescue teams, many of the casualties resulted from electrocution and collapsing structures. Emergency services were overwhelmed as calls for help surged from across the city.
Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) reported widespread power outages in multiple areas, further aggravating the situation for citizens who were already dealing with floodwaters and blocked roads.
Authorities have declared a state of emergency in the worst-hit zones and deployed teams from disaster management units to carry out rescue and relief operations. Officials are also urging residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.
Meteorological departments have forecast more rain in the coming days, raising concerns over continued flooding and additional risks to life and property. The provincial government has promised immediate rehabilitation efforts, but citizens are demanding long-term solutions to Lahore’s recurring drainage and urban planning issues.
The tragic loss of lives and extensive damage caused by the rainfall highlight the urgent need for robust infrastructure, efficient drainage systems, and climate-resilient urban policies in Lahore.
