Team GB Cricket Team Formation for 2028 Olympics
A Great Britain (GB) cricket team, potentially including men’s and women’s players from England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, is nearing approval by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Scotland. This initiative precedes cricket’s anticipated return to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028.
Sources indicate that this newly formed entity will essentially serve as the men’s team’s title defense, having secured victory during cricket’s previous Olympic appearance at the Paris 2000 Games.
Reports suggest that a joint board, comprising executive and non-executive representatives from both the ECB and Cricket Scotland, will manage the affairs of GB Cricket.
Moreover, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is expected to be established with Cricket Ireland, exploring the possibility of including Northern Irish players in the Olympic squad.
Notable Northern Irish players who could qualify for participation include Ireland’s white-ball captain Paul Stirling, Mark Adair, Andy McBrine, and Ireland women’s wicketkeeper Amy Hunter.
GB Cricket is slated for formal establishment in the coming months. Subsequently, it will require recognition from both the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the British Olympic Association (BOA) before attaining full membership within the National Olympic Committee (NOC).
While the qualification pathway for the LA 2028 Olympics remains undefined, it has been determined that the England men’s and women’s teams will compete for Team GB qualification, with players from Scotland and Ireland integrated afterward.
England men’s white-ball captain Harry Brook commented, “It would be pretty cool to have the opportunity to participate in the Olympics and potentially win a gold medal. However, it’s still quite distant, and I haven’t given it much consideration yet.”
