Karachi Faces Water Supply Issues Due to Power Breakdowns
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) reported on Thursday that water pumping stations experienced electrical outages amid the current intense heat wave, causing significant disruptions.
According to the utility’s representative, these power failures are impeding the water corporation’s capacity to maintain the city’s water supply.
The spokesperson noted that on May 27, electricity was cut off at the K3 and K4 phases. Consequently, the city was unable to receive 45 million gallons of water that day.
Furthermore, on May 28, a power disruption occurred at 2:45 a.m. and was not resolved until 7:50 a.m., causing a complete shutdown of the K3’s power supply for the entire day.
The water corporation representative stated that this resulted in another 45 million gallons of water being withheld from the city’s supply on May 28.
In total, power outages caused a deficiency of at least 90 million gallons in the city’s water supply over the course of two days.
The water corporation has since confirmed that the water supply throughout the city has been restored to its normal levels.
Power outages have been a recurring issue during the intense summer heat. These utility disruptions are significantly affecting businesses, household tasks, and the daily activities of residents.
Earlier last week, residents and business community representatives expressed their dismay over the increasing loadshedding amidst rising summer temperatures.
A Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industries representative informed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) that the ongoing energy crisis is severely impacting both daily life and commercial operations.
