Sindh Govt. Eliminates Public Road Parking Fees in Karachi

The Sindh government has officially announced the elimination of all parking fees on Karachi’s public roads, signaling a major change in the city’s parking regulations.

The mandate specifies that no governmental organization operating under the Sindh government, inclusive of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), is permitted to impose parking fees on roadways within the municipality.

According to the directive, parking fees are now restricted to designated locations, including parking lots, private properties, and specific zones managed by local councils.

The notification stated that strict legal action would be taken against any person or entity discovered charging the public for parking on public roads.

This action follows an earlier decision this month to eliminate parking fees on 46 roads under the control of the KMC.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab stated in February that “This decision has been made in the interest of the public, as the KMC can now support itself,” alluding to advancements in the metropolitan corporation’s financial health.

He further explained that due to the corporation’s financial soundness, with over Rs2 billion in its accounts, collecting Rs40-50 million in parking fees is no longer necessary.

Wahab had earlier declared that the KMC had generated a “record Rs2.3 billion in revenue” in just seven months, marking a 300% increase in profits while 751 development projects were underway.
