KARACHI: The sorrowful demise of Sawera, a five-year-old girl, has ignited sadness and fury in Karachi, resulting in a protest led by her family and local community members.

The young girl’s body was found in a stream within the Liaquatabad B-1 vicinity on Sunday. She had been reported missing the previous day, having left her home in Sikandar Goth, within the Sachal Police Station’s jurisdiction, to play.

Subsequently, her family was contacted by the Liaquatabad Police Station, who informed them of the discovery of her body.

Speaking to the media, the girl’s maternal uncle stated that Sawera disappeared at approximately 11am, and upon recovery, her body was unrecognizable.

He further mentioned that her sister identified her by her hair. The uncle also revealed that the family had reviewed CCTV footage showing a woman attempting to lead the girl away.

In response to this heartbreaking event, the family, along with local residents, organized a demonstration on Gulzar Hijri Road. They placed the child’s body on the road, demanding the apprehension of those responsible.

The protest caused traffic disruptions in the area for a number of hours before being called off after assurances from the police that appropriate measures would be implemented. The girl’s uncle also disclosed that a missing person report had been officially filed at the Sachal Police Station promptly after Sawera went missing.

He asserted that when the body was found, her hands and feet were tied, intensifying the family’s suspicions of potential criminal activity.

However, police officials stated that no pertinent CCTV footage from the area has been obtained to date.

A post-mortem examination has been conducted, with preliminary reports indicating no signs of sexual assault. The inquiry remains in progress.

The funeral prayer for Sawera was conducted at a mosque situated in Post Office Society.
