KMC to Fine Wrong-Way Drivers Rs15,000

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has revealed intentions to levy a penalty of Rs15,000 on motorists caught driving against the flow of traffic on major city streets.

This action seeks to reduce traffic infractions and improve safety for the public and will be implemented through City Wardens.

The initiative is a result of directives from Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab and the Karachi Task Force. A formal proposal to approve the fine will be presented at the next KMC council meeting for authorization and enactment.

Wahab stated that firm measures are required to avert incidents and guarantee a more seamless movement of vehicles. KMC has requested that all drivers of cars and motorcycles abide by traffic regulations and work with law enforcement to help ensure safety on roads throughout the city.

Karachi experienced a concerning increase in road mishaps in February 2025, where 73 individuals lost their lives, including eight women and five children. Furthermore, over 700 people suffered critical injuries, with over 90 being women.

This alarming pattern has persisted, with total figures up to April 10 indicating 138 fatalities, 16 of whom were women and 14 were children, and over 1,500 injuries, including more than 160 women.

According to authorities at the Edhi Information Bureau, the figures mentioned only include serious injuries recorded at specific major healthcare centers.

In actuality, over 500 individuals, predominantly motorcyclists, are taken every day to public and private medical facilities across the city with fractures and other traumas resulting from road collisions on Karachi’s increasingly dangerous roads.

In February alone, the city averaged 2.5 deaths and 25 injuries each day, emphasizing the growing problem caused by reckless motorists, unrestricted movement of heavy dump trucks, and inadequate traffic regulation.
