Security Measures Intensified for Muharram Processions in Karachi
The Sindh government has announced a ban on riding motorcycles as a preventative measure to ensure the safety and security of Muharram processions and related activities throughout Karachi.
Muharram holds immense significance as one of the four sacred months in the Islamic calendar. The 10th day, known as Ashura, commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his family during the Battle of Karbala.
Throughout the nation, devotees participate in processions and majalis during Muharram. Religious scholars address large gatherings, all held under strict security protocols.
In Karachi, authorities have mobilized over 5,000 police officers for the central procession, along with an additional 1,000 personnel to manage traffic. Furthermore, cellular service has been temporarily suspended along the procession route, which starts from Nishtar Park.
Enhanced Security Measures
- Sharpshooters positioned on tall buildings provide additional surveillance.
- Procession routes are thoroughly inspected using sniffer dogs.
- Monitoring is conducted via closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems.
Traffic Diversions and Road Closures
MA Jinnah Road is currently closed to all traffic. Businesses and markets located on MA Jinnah Road, Saddar, Empress, Regal, and Lighthouse have been temporarily shut down. Streets that connect to the procession routes are blocked off using containers.
Only vehicles displaying valid procession stickers will be permitted to proceed. Similarly, vehicles approaching from Sharea Quaideen are restricted from going beyond the Khudadad Colony signal.
All vehicular traffic is prohibited beyond Guru Mandir, with commuters being redirected from Soldier Bazaar toward Coast Guard or Nishtar Road.
Traffic originating from Nazimabad is being rerouted from Lasbela Chowk towards Nishtar Road and Garden.
Vehicles traveling from the Super Highway are being diverted from Liaquatabad No. 10 to Nazimabad Chowrangi No. 2.
Individuals traveling from Liaquatabad are being directed towards Teen Hatti, Martin Road, and Jail Road.
Alternative Routes
As per the Karachi Traffic Police’s diversion plan, commuters traveling from Hassan Square to PP Chowrangi can use Kashmir Road under the Jail Flyover, proceeding to Society Light Signal (Sharea Quaideen), or use the Jail Flyover to reach Teen Hatti and Nishtar Road via Lasbela Chowk.
