Jon Jones Clarifies Stance on Retirement Amidst White House Event Speculation
MMA icon Jon Jones has stated his ongoing training regimen for a potential UFC event at the White House, countering claims that he has retired. This follows UFC President Dana White’s remarks seemingly dismissing Jones’ participation in the event, planned as part of the United States’ 250th-anniversary celebration.
Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned a UFC showcase at the White House as a possible feature of the upcoming July 4th festivities.
Jones, despite his retired status, quickly signaled his enthusiasm for competing at the high-profile venue shortly after Trump’s announcement.
In a message shared on X, Jones, though currently inactive, conveyed his eagerness to participate in a match held near one of the globe’s most prominent buildings.
“Fighting at the White House? (eyes emoji)”
He hinted at preparations already underway in a subsequent post.
“Just re-entered the testing pool, which lasted about two weeks. Figured we’d keep everyone’s options open,” Jones posted on X.
However, UFC’s White seems hesitant about a swift return to the spotlight for Jones.
Regardless of White’s stance, Jones maintains his position regarding retirement.
“I’m not retired,” he affirmed.
“I’m actively training five days a week, and I’m in the UFC’s drug testing pool.”
When questioned about the possibility of fighting at the White House, he expressed uncertainty.
“I don’t really know,” Jones admitted.
“It’s kind of out of my control now. I’m training for the event. I’ll be ready for the event.
“That’s my goal. That’s my intention, but ultimately it’s up to the boss.”
Previously, a potential clash between Jones and former interim champion Tom Aspinall captured significant attention from both fans and the UFC.
The pressure on Jones and the UFC escalated due to fan demand for Jones to accept Aspinall’s challenge for a unification bout.
However, on June 21, following a fight night in Azerbaijan, Dana White, the UFC CEO, declared Jones’ official retirement and recognized Aspinall as the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, marking the conclusion of Jones’ era.
