England’s John Stones Considered Retirement Due to Injuries
MANCHESTER: England international and Manchester City defender, John Stones, has disclosed that he contemplated ending his career last season. A string of injuries had taken a toll on him both mentally and physically during the 2023-24 season.
The Manchester City center-back has only played in 11 Premier League matches because of foot and hamstring problems, with the latter sidelining him in February.
Despite these challenges, the 31-year-old has been selected by England’s coach for Thursday’s friendly against Wales and the World Cup qualifier against Latvia on Tuesday, October 14.
A victory in Riga would guarantee England a spot in the finals to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year.
Stones reflected on his difficult period, revealing that constant setbacks had pushed him to the brink. He communicated this in a recent interview.
“Last season was difficult for me, so much so that I considered quitting,” Stones told a media outlet.
“I was tired of being extremely professional and trying my best, only to keep getting injured without understanding why.”
John admitted that the situation had been emotionally and physically draining.
“You reach a point where you’re unsure of the reasons behind the recurring issues, especially after investing significant effort. This makes it very mentally taxing,” he explained.
However, the defender stated that his resilience and resolve prevailed.
“My emotions were intense, and I wasn’t thinking clearly. But deep down, I don’t believe I would have actually retired. I possess a fighting spirit and a desire to win that prevents me from stopping,” Stones reflected.
Stones has started in five games for City this season, although Pep Guardiola seems to favor Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol in the central defense.
Regardless, the player maintains his commitment to England is unwavering.
“Expressing my affection for England is challenging; showing my support, offering guidance, and being a supportive teammate was a meaningful experience,” Stones concluded.
