Sinner to Clash with Musetti in US Open Quarterfinals
NEW YORK: In a commanding display at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday, defending champion Jannik Sinner dismantled 23rd seed Alexander Bublik with a score of 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, advancing emphatically to the US Open quarterfinals.
The Italian world number one delivered an almost perfect showing, maintaining control throughout the match against his typically unpredictable adversary. Entering the Labor Day contest, Sinner aimed for his 25th successive major victory on hard courts, a feat he achieved with considerable efficiency.
Sinner quickly established dominance, securing a 4-0 advantage with two service breaks before Bublik could gain a foothold. The 24-year-old clinched the first set with a signature backhand winner after skillfully retrieving a drop shot, thereby asserting his authority early in the match.
Bublik, recognized for his diverse playing style and frequent use of drop shots, attempted to disrupt Sinner’s rhythm. However, the Kazakh player’s serve proved unreliable during critical junctures, limiting his resistance to fleeting moments and resulting in breaks in each set. Conversely, Sinner demonstrated composure and precision, guaranteeing his place in a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the eighth consecutive tournament.
Reflecting on his decisive victory, Sinner noted that the electric atmosphere of the night session motivated him to elevate his performance.
“Night matches have a different intensity because the focus sharpens, or at least that’s how it feels to me. The vibe changes, and the crowd’s energy surges. So, it adjusts how you play too,” he remarked.
“Bublik had a long, grueling match previously against Tommy Paul, concluding quite late. As a result, his serve wasn’t up to its usual mark. I managed to break him in every set, which enhanced my assurance and aided my performance.”
Sinner is now set to encounter fellow Italian player Lorenzo Musetti in an all-Italian quarterfinal scheduled for Tuesday.
