Girelli Shines as Italy Secures Historic Win, Reaching Semifinals After 28 Years

GENEVA: In a thrilling quarter-final match on Wednesday, Italy broke their 28-year wait to enter the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Euro with a 2–1 victory over Norway.

Cristiana Girelli, the forward, played a pivotal role, scoring twice in the second half. Her second goal, which came in the 90th minute, secured Italy’s place in the final four for the first time since 1997.

Greggi, who was substituted onto the field in the 77th minute, highlighted the team’s strong bond and the emotional significance of their achievement.

“I attribute this victory to our humility and unity as a group, which allowed us to demonstrate our abilities and ultimately secure the win,” she stated.

“The second goal was filled with emotion, encapsulating our entire journey and sacrifices. It signified our advancement to the semi-final.”

Forward Michela Cambiaghi expressed the team’s disbelief following the game’s conclusion.

“The feeling was unbelievable. We could hardly believe it when the final whistle blew,” she commented.

Defender Elena Linari lauded Girelli, 35, for her match-winning performance, referring to her as a source of inspiration.

“We should put Girelli in a glass case for the semi-final so she can rest; she truly deserves it. She is an incredible inspiration,” Linari added.

Midfielder Giada Greggi told reporters after the match that the team’s solidarity was crucial to their success. The Italian team, energized by passionate supporters chanting ‘Forza Italia,’ illuminated the Stade de Geneve, thanks to a stellar performance by veteran forward Cristiana Girelli.

Italy is now set to compete against either England or Sweden in the semi-final, scheduled for Wednesday.
