Italy Keen to Bolster Pakistan’s Textile Industry

Marilina Armellin, the Italian Ambassador to Pakistan, has reaffirmed Italy’s enduring dedication to supporting Pakistan’s textile sector, recognizing it as a critical element of the nation’s economic advancement and export capabilities.

She highlighted that Italy is a dependable ally in Pakistan’s decades-long journey of textile progress, providing cutting-edge machinery and technology throughout the entire production process, from yarn production to finished apparel.

During an exclusive interview, Ambassador Armellin emphasized the necessity for enhanced bilateral commercial cooperation.

“Italy is dedicated to reinforcing this significant alliance by facilitating access to the newest textile technologies and machinery, assisting Pakistan in boosting its economic activities,” she stated.

However, she advised Pakistani officials to decrease import duties on textile machinery to improve the accessibility of high-tech equipment. She pointed out that lowering these barriers would not only aid in modernizing the industry but also significantly contribute to Pakistan’s GDP growth, given the textile sector’s position as the country’s largest manufacturing and export-generating industry.

The ambassador emphasized the importance of the recent IGATEX Pakistan 2025 exhibition, which took place at the Karachi Expo Centre, stating that the event represented a turning point in industrial cooperation between Italy and Pakistan. For the first time, there were two specialized Italian pavilions displaying state-of-the-art textile machinery.

“IGATEX is a crucial exhibition, not just for Pakistan but for the entire region,” she remarked.

“Italian firms that participated are well aware of the potential in the Pakistani market. They are present with a strong desire to conduct business, and we fully support and encourage their initiatives.”

The event featured over 450 exhibitors from 30 countries, including Italy. Eleven Italian companies displayed over 50 well-known brands across the two pavilions, demonstrating growing interest in Pakistan’s textile and garment industries.

Ambassador Armellin’s statements underscore the strategic value Italy places on its commercial and industrial connections with Pakistan, particularly in industries where mutual progress and innovation can flourish.

In a collaborative effort to strengthen economic relations, Armellin emphasized Italy’s commitment to increasing bilateral trade and investment across numerous sectors.

“Our two economic systems complement each other in many ways, and our goal here is to enhance these complementarities and capitalize on them.”

She stated that the current trade balance is at €1.5 billion, indicating a strong base for future expansion. “There is considerable potential for improvement.”

Italy exports a wide array of machinery and technologies to Pakistan, including cutting-edge equipment for the textile, leather, footwear, and agricultural industries, she noted.

She added that Pakistan primarily exports textile and leather items to Italy, as well as food products such as rice.

Ambassador Armellin emphasized the importance of mutual participation in trade exhibitions to further strengthen economic ties. She encouraged Pakistani businesses to participate in prominent Italian and European fairs such as Salone del Mobile in Milan, EICMA, Expo Riva Schuh, Linea Pelle, and Cosmoprof. These venues offer chances to display products and investigate new markets.

Ambassador Armellin shared several examples of successful Italian investments in Pakistan. One notable example is a collaboration between a major fast-food chain in Pakistan and an Italian coffee producer. This partnership entails importing high-quality coffee beans and espresso machines to meet the rising demand for premium coffee among Pakistani consumers.

In the dental sector, an Italian firm specializing in dental technology is growing its operations in Pakistan, offering advanced equipment and training to local specialists.

Reflecting on Italy’s economic transformation, Ambassador Armellin emphasized the country’s resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. She noted that Italy quickly shifted to renewable energy sources during the energy crises of the 1970s, establishing itself as a leader in sustainable energy. This adaptability has been critical in preserving economic stability and growth.

Ambassador Armellin proposed that Pakistan could gain from implementing similar strategies, particularly in diversifying energy sources and investing in sustainable technologies.

Ambassador Armellin emphasized the strong cultural and social links between Italy and Pakistan in addition to economic collaboration. She emphasized the shared values of family, community, and hospitality, which underpin both societies. These commonalities have fostered considerable mutual respect and understanding, strengthening the bilateral relationship.

The large Pakistani diaspora in Italy has fostered strong interpersonal ties, which are regarded as vital to bilateral relations.

As Italy and Pakistan continue to explore opportunities for deeper collaboration, Ambassador Armellin voiced confidence in the future of bilateral ties.
