Heavy Rains Cause Havoc Across Pakistan

Several regions of Pakistan have been impacted by significant rainfall, resulting in inundated streets, property damage, and, tragically, at least seven fatalities reported in Dera Ismail Khan.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi Affected

In Islamabad and Rawalpindi, continuous rainfall for several hours led to rapid-onset flooding in local streams and drainage systems. The Bhara Kahu area experienced considerable flooding, with water entering numerous commercial establishments and residential properties, leaving many vehicles immobilized.

Rawal Dam Spillways Opened

To mitigate increasing water levels, authorities initiated the opening of the Rawal Dam spillways.

Margalla Hills Trails Closed

For public safety, several trails within the Margalla Hills have been temporarily closed. Specifically, Trails 2, 3, 4, 5, and the trail near Saidpur village are inaccessible to the public.

Dera Ismail Khan Hit Hard

In Dera Ismail Khan, strong winds accompanied by heavy rainfall caused trees to fall and electricity lines to break, resulting in widespread power outages. Rescue personnel have reported that the collapse of roofs in various areas led to at least seven deaths and numerous injuries.

Other Regions Experience Rainfall

Other regions within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Mardan, and North and South Waziristan, have also experienced substantial rainfall. The deputy commissioner in Mardan has been overseeing relief efforts and drainage procedures within the city.

Landslides in Azad Kashmir

In the Bagh district of Azad Kashmir, rainfall triggered landslides, which caused damage to two residences and a local mosque. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities.

Gilgit-Baltistan on Alert

Officials in Gilgit-Baltistan have issued warnings for additional rainfall beginning Saturday. Hotels located along the Gilgit riverbank have been temporarily shut down, and educational institutions in proximity to the river will remain closed on Monday due to concerns about rising water levels.

National Weather Alert

The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a weather advisory, indicating the likelihood of more widespread and intense rainfall throughout much of the country until August 30.
