Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar arrived in the United States on Sunday evening. He is scheduled to attend significant events in New York, highlighting Pakistan’s leadership of the UN Security Council (UNSC), followed by a series of bilateral meetings in Washington.
Upon his arrival, the Deputy Prime Minister was welcomed by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad.
Pakistan formally took over the UNSC presidency on Tuesday for July 2025, as part of its two-year term as a non-permanent member, which commenced on January 1, 2025.
Key Events During UNSC Presidency
During Pakistan’s Security Council presidency, the Foreign Minister will lead a high-level open discussion on “Promoting international peace and security through multilateralism and peaceful settlement of disputes.” This event is one of Pakistan’s signature events at the Security Council.
According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, the core aim of this high-level debate is to explore avenues for strengthening multilateralism and enhancing diplomatic efforts aimed at the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Furthermore, the Foreign Minister will preside over the quarterly open debate of the Security Council focusing on the “Situation in the Middle East including the Palestinian Question.”
He is also slated to chair a high-level briefing of the UN Security Council, which will concentrate on enhancing cooperation between the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
This assembly is part of Pakistan’s continued efforts to enhance collaboration between the OIC and the UN to maintain international peace and security.
In a move to showcase Pakistan’s firm dedication and support for the right to self-determination of the Palestinian population, Dar will participate in the high-level Conference on the “Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the implementation of Two-State Solution”.
The press release further emphasized that Pakistan’s participation in the UN Security Council’s Quarterly Debate on the Middle East, in addition to the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of Two-State Solution, demonstrates Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
Originally scheduled for June, the conference, sponsored by France and Saudi Arabia, faced postponement due to the conflict between Iran and Israel.
During his time in New York, DPM Dar is expected to engage in several bilateral meetings with his counterparts and senior UN officials.
The Foreign Office press release concluded that Dar’s presence in New York and Washington underscores Pakistan’s increasing significance on the global stage and its evolving relationships with the US.
