Ireland Faces Injury Setbacks Ahead of West Indies ODI Series
Ireland’s cricket team has been dealt a blow as two pivotal players, Craig Young and Curtis Campher, have been sidelined due to injuries before their three-match ODI series against the West Indies. The series is scheduled to take place in Clontarf.
Key Players Ruled Out
Craig Young, a seasoned pace bowler, sustained a hamstring injury while representing the North West Warriors in a match against Leinster Lightning the previous week. Curtis Campher, the 26-year-old all-rounder, suffered a finger fracture during a practice session earlier this week. Their unavailability compounds the challenges for Ireland’s seam attack, which is already missing Mark Adair, Graham Hume, and Fionn Hand due to injuries.
Replacements Named
To address these absences, Cricket Ireland has brought in Jordan Neill, 19, and Stephen Doheny, 26, for the ODI series.
Series Details
The three-match ODI series against the West Indies is scheduled for May 21, 23, and 25 in Clontarf. This tour marks the West Indies’ first visit to Ireland since 2019. Following the ODIs, the West Indies team will proceed to England for a white-ball series before returning to Ireland for three T20 Internationals in Bready in June.
Squad Announcement
Cricket Ireland officially revealed their squads for the entire white-ball series against the West Indies, including three ODIs and three T20Is. Paul Stirling, an experienced top-order batter, will captain Ireland in both formats, with Lorcan Tucker serving as vice-captain.
Notably absent from the ODI squad is Mark Adair, who is still recovering from an injury. However, he is expected to be available for the T20I series, which will commence after a two-and-a-half-week interval.
Ireland’s squads also feature three uncapped players – Cade Carmichael, Tom Mayes, and Liam McCarthy – all of whom impressed during the Ireland Wolves’ recent tour of the UAE. Carmichael and Mayes are included in the ODI squad, while McCarthy has been selected for both formats.
Selector’s Comments
National Men’s selector Andrew White lauded the three uncapped players for their outstanding performances during the Ireland Wolves’ tour of the UAE the previous month.
Cade Carmichael
“Cade Carmichael has been part of the pathway program for several years. His skill, stroke play, and resilience were evident during the Wolves’ tour in April. His development over the past few years demonstrates how consistent performances and the ability to adapt to different conditions have earned him an International call-up.”
Liam McCarthy and Tom Mayes
“Similarly, seam bowlers Liam McCarthy and Tom Mayes have been recognized for their consistency and ability to elevate their game. Both players bring unique qualities to the squad – Mayes with his height and accuracy, and McCarthy with a different dynamic to our attack, which will challenge the batters’ techniques.”
