Iran launched a significant retaliatory strike over the weekend, targeting Israel’s strategic Dimona city, home to its nuclear reactor. This attack, part of what Iran calls ‘Operation True Promise,’ marks the fourth phase of its response to what it perceives as Israeli aggressions. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the strikes hit their targets with increasing accuracy, indicating a sustained and evolving offensive capability. This escalation signals a potential shift in regional military dynamics.
The IRGC specifically stated that its forces simultaneously attacked targets in both northern and southern Israel using a combination of three types of missiles. These included the advanced Fateh hypersonic missile, known for its extreme speed making interdiction difficult, and the Qadr and Emad ballistic missiles, designed for long-range precision strikes. Attack drones were also deployed as part of the coordinated assault, suggesting a sophisticated and multi-faceted military operation.
Dimona, located in the Israeli desert, is considered one of the most secure cities in the world, protected by Israel’s most advanced air defense systems like the Iron Dome and Arrow. The IRGC’s claim that its missiles reached this heavily fortified area, reportedly killing dozens, challenges previous assumptions about its vulnerability. This strikes at the heart of Israel’s perceived security and technological superiority in air defense.
Beyond Dimona, the IRGC asserted that other Israeli cities were also targeted, including Beersheba, a major urban center with numerous military bases, and Eilat, a key southern port city on the Red Sea. The cities of Arad and Kiryat Gat, both identified as militarily significant locations, were also reportedly struck. This widespread targeting indicates an effort to disrupt various aspects of Israeli military and strategic infrastructure.
The IRGC further claimed that this latest wave of attacks extended beyond Israeli territory, explicitly stating that American military bases were also hit. Installations mentioned include Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, and Al Minhad and Al Dhafra Air Bases in the United Arab Emirates. If confirmed, this would represent a significant broadening of the conflict, directly involving American assets in the region.
