Pant Exits Field Due to Injury During Test Match

MANCHESTER: India’s cricket team faced a worrying situation when wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant sustained an injury, leading to his departure from the field on the first day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

During the 68th over of India’s initial innings, Pant suffered a foot injury. Consequently, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja took his place with the score at 212/3.

The incident unfolded on the fourth ball of the over. Attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, Pant got a thick inside edge, which caused the ball to hit his foot.

The 27-year-old displayed obvious signs of discomfort after being struck and immediately requested medical attention from the dressing room.

Medical staff provided initial treatment on the field. However, due to the need for more extensive care, the umpires requested that the process continue off the field, resulting in Pant retiring hurt.

Despite the initial treatment on the field, Rishabh Pant required a buggy to leave the field, as he was unable to walk off with assistance.

The left-handed batter managed to score 37 runs from 48 balls, which included two fours and one six.

According to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Playing Conditions, Rishabh Pant is permitted to bat again should he recover from the injury.

Section 25.4 of the ICC Playing Conditions explains, “A batter may retire at any time during their innings when the ball is dead. The umpires must be informed of the reason for a batter retiring before play continues.”

It further states, “If a batter retires due to illness, injury, or another unavoidable cause, that batter has the right to resume their innings.”
