Draper Withdraws from US Open Due to Injury

Britain’s Jack Draper, seeded fifth, has officially withdrawn from the US Open prior to his scheduled second-round match against Zizou Bergs. Tournament organizers announced on Wednesday that the withdrawal was due to a persistent arm injury that has been affecting him for several weeks.

Draper advanced to the second round by defeating Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez on Monday. However, the left-arm issue, which had sidelined him since his second-round exit at Wimbledon last month, continued to trouble him.

“I’m very sorry to announce that I’ll be pulling out of the U.S. Open,” Draper stated in a social media post.

“I gave it my best shot to be ready and compete, but the pain in my arm is too severe, and I need to prioritize my well-being. I appreciate all the support I’ve received.”

The 23-year-old player had previously reached the semi-finals of the US Open the previous year, where he was defeated by Jannik Sinner, who ultimately won the tournament.

Following his first match in 2025, Draper acknowledged that making it back to the final four this year appeared doubtful. He expressed his pride in simply being able to play, given the uncertainty surrounding his recovery from a bruised humerus on his serving arm.

“The recovery process is underway,” he commented after his first-round victory.

“Considering the arm injury, the typical return to competition is around eight weeks; I’m here in seven, so it’s still early.”
“I’ve had to slightly modify my serve to minimize the pain. The lead-up to this tournament was quite rapid, preventing me from going all-out on my serve in recent weeks.”

Jack Draper’s early departure from Flushing Meadows is a significant setback for the British player, who achieved a major career milestone on American hard courts earlier this year by winning the Indian Wells title in California.

The ATP live rankings indicate that Draper is projected to fall two positions to seventh globally. This development may impact his chances of securing a spot in the ATP Finals in Turin, scheduled for November.

Bergs will now face either Gabriel Diallo or Jaume Munar in the third round in New York.
