Djokovic Achieves Milestone as Oldest Player in US Open’s Last 16
NEW YORK: Ben Shelton’s US Open journey concluded abruptly on Friday at Louis Armstrong Stadium. The American, seeded sixth, had to retire mid-match against Adrian Mannarino of France due to a significant shoulder injury.
Shelton exhibited evident discomfort during the match and opted to withdraw before the deciding fifth set.
“I felt something happen in my shoulder; I’m not sure what it is. I’m experiencing considerable pain,” Shelton stated following the match, regarding his premature exit. The withdrawal was a setback for the young American, who was considered a promising contender in the competition.
Shelton’s departure was part of a tough day for American supporters. Emma Navarro, seeded tenth, was defeated by Czech Barbora Krejcikova, while Frances Tiafoe, the 17th seed, lost to Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in straight sets. As a result, the home crowd’s aspirations were dampened, with only a few Americans still in contention.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, despite struggling with a lower back problem, continued to set records. The 38-year-old Serbian triumphed over Cameron Norrie of Britain with a score of 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3, securing his place in the fourth round.
This victory enabled Djokovic to surpass Roger Federer’s record, achieving his 192nd Grand Slam hardcourt win and becoming the oldest player to advance beyond the round of 32 at the US Open since Jimmy Connors in 1991.
Defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka also progressed, overcoming difficulties and injury concerns to advance in the competition.
Tommy Paul of America aims to sustain his country’s momentum after a hard-fought four-set victory, while Jessica Pegula, seeded fourth, and Marketa Vondrousova, a former Wimbledon champion, secured their spots in the round of 16.
