Trilateral Meeting in Tehran Aims to Improve Pilgrimage

A noteworthy diplomatic engagement occurred in Tehran as the interior ministers of Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq met for a crucial trilateral conference. The primary objective was to explore avenues to improve the facilitation of religious pilgrims traveling among the three nations.

The conference reached a consensus, agreeing to implement every possible measure to assist pilgrims on visits to sacred sites located in Iran and Iraq.

To ensure the efficient execution of these efforts, a joint working group will be formed. This group will manage coordination and operational aspects, guaranteeing secure and smooth journeys for millions of pilgrims, particularly during significant religious observances such as Arbaeen.

Key Highlights from the Conference

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi conveyed his appreciation to Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni for hosting the summit at Pakistan’s request.

Naqvi underscored the significance of pilgrims and reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to enhancing their overall pilgrimage experience.

Policy Changes Announced

Naqvi revealed forthcoming policy adjustments, including a novel regulation set to take effect on January 1, 2026. According to this rule, Pakistani pilgrims will be required to travel to Iraq exclusively under the guidance of registered group organizers, who will also be responsible for their return. Exceptions will only be granted to individuals with special visas issued by the Iraqi embassy.

“The intent of the new group travel arrangement is to control unlawful entries and overstays,” Naqvi clarified, noting that both Iraq and Iran have expressed their support for the revised system.

He acknowledged the governments of Iraq and Iran for their outstanding administration of the millions of pilgrims they receive each year and affirmed Pakistan’s complete cooperation on all matters related to pilgrimage.

Naqvi also congratulated Iran on its recent military achievement, commending the leadership of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and reaffirming Pakistan’s support during the conflict. He stated, “Pakistan openly denounced the attack on Iran and firmly supported its entitlement to self-defense.”

Notable attendees at the conference included Iranian Deputy Interior Minister Ali Akbar Pourjamshidian, Senior Advisor Nader Yar Ahmadi, Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan Amiri Moghaddam, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, Pakistan’s Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, and senior officials from Iraq’s Ministry of Interior.
