Bumrah Prioritizes Test Cricket, Likely to Miss Asia Cup
Sources indicate that Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler, is anticipated to be absent from the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025. The tournament is slated to occur in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28.
Reports suggest Bumrah’s limited participation in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, where he played only three Tests to manage his workload, will extend to the continental competition for similar reasons.
Despite his restricted appearances, Bumrah’s significance to India’s pace attack remained evident, delivering 119.4 overs across three Test matches and securing 14 dismissals.
Furthermore, an individual familiar with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) affairs mentioned that Bumrah’s focus on Test cricket could contribute to his absence from the Asia Cup 2025. India is scheduled to host West Indies for a two-Test series, beginning on October 2, just following the conclusion of the Asia Cup.
While the Asia Cup is viewed as preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, insiders have hinted that Jasprit Bumrah might use the series against New Zealand as a preparatory phase for the major event.
A BCCI insider stated, “The situation requires careful consideration, as Bumrah has a strong preference for Test cricket, especially with World Test Championship points at stake. Regarding T20s, he could participate in the series against New Zealand in January as a warm-up for the T20 World Cup.”
The source further commented, “If Bumrah participates in the Asia Cup and India advances to the final, his participation against West Indies in Ahmedabad becomes improbable. The critical question is whether Bumrah is needed against West Indies, or if he should skip the Asia Cup after a month-long break and then play the two Tests against South Africa. This decision will require deliberation by Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir.”
