Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced on Wednesday that Imran Khan’s sons are welcome to visit Pakistan. This statement followed an appeal from Jemima Goldsmith. She had asked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for help. The sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, have faced delays in obtaining visas. Their visit aims to allow them to see their imprisoned father.
Tarar clarified on the social platform X that the boys can use their National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (Nicop). This card allows them entry as Pakistani citizens. No visa is necessary for Nicop holders. The minister assured that Khan’s phone calls with his children would continue. These calls are a regular arrangement, he added.
Goldsmith had appealed to the Prime Minister on Monday. She stated her sons applied for visas in January. The Pakistan consulate website suggested a 7-10 day processing time. Sixty days have now passed without approval. She mentioned defence officials had previously promised safe travel for the boys.
The sons, who reside in London with Goldsmith, have not seen their father since 2022. This was after an assassination attempt on Khan. Goldsmith expressed concern about Khan’s declining health. She highlighted that her sons are also restricted from phone calls and letters. This situation underscores the difficulties families face in connecting with prisoners.
This development offers a potential pathway for Kasim and Sulaiman to reunite with their father. The minister’s statement provides clarity on entry requirements. It aims to resolve the visa issue. The situation reflects the ongoing challenges and sensitivities surrounding Imran Khan’s imprisonment and his family’s welfare.
