Imad Wasim Clarifies Remarks on Sikandar Raza’s PSL Final Appearance

Islamabad United’s all-rounder, Imad Wasim, a former Pakistani international player, has clarified the situation regarding his recent statements concerning Lahore Qalandars’ player, Sikandar Raza, and his timely arrival before the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 final.

Raza had briefly departed from the Qalandars’ camp to play for Zimbabwe in a Test match against England in Nottingham. The match concluded late Saturday, creating concern about his presence for the PSL final.

Despite the limited time, Raza was present with the Lahore Qalandars just before the toss. He was prepared to participate in the crucial match against Quetta Gladiators.

In a previous interview, Imad was asked to describe Sikandar Raza in a single word. Instead, he talked about the difficulties of franchise cricket and the role of financial compensation.

Imad mentioned, “Like Shoaib Akhtar said, money can make things happen. If you are compensated, you will participate. I also travel frequently. Sometimes, a match concludes, and the following day you are playing another. I’ve traveled for 24 hours and immediately played in a match. So, money can influence decisions.”

However, Imad’s comments were generally interpreted as a criticism of Raza’s dedication, resulting in disapproval across social platforms and media outlets.

In a subsequent interview with a sports platform, Imad, 36, explained that his comments were misunderstood.

“The issue with our people and media is that they only focus on headlines and overlook the entire context. We were discussing providing players with financial security and the state of domestic cricket. My statement was not meant to imply that he’s solely motivated by money; he’s also driven by passion and commitment to his franchise. There is a significant level of commitment that needs recognition,” Imad stated.

The 36-year-old conveyed his unhappiness with the way his statements were misinterpreted.

“I was honestly praising Sikandar Raza’s commitment, as well as the dedication of other players who travel frequently to play games, which is challenging. People misinterpreted it as me saying ‘you can do anything for money,’ which is a fair point to some extent, but it’s important to realize that a cricketer’s career is short and demanding,” he said.

He clarified his position and praised the player’s commitment, underscoring the professionalism that often goes unnoticed.

“When commentators criticize players on TV, they should acknowledge the commitment and professionalism these individuals possess. I see this in Sikandar Raza, and that was my intention. I don’t understand why headlines are sensationalized. If they need headlines, they can ask me; I can provide them,” he concluded.

Notably, Raza’s dedication proved beneficial. He was essential to Lahore Qalandars’ victorious journey, aiding them in securing their third PSL title with a remarkable six-wicket victory over Quetta Gladiators.

Lahore began strongly in their pursuit of a challenging 202-run target, thanks to Mohammad Naeem’s impressive 47 off 27 balls. Abdullah Shafique contributed 41 off 28 deliveries before the run rate became difficult.

As the game seemed to slip away, Sikandar Raza took charge, hitting important boundaries off Mohammad Amir to turn the tide. Thisara Perera also performed exceptionally well, scoring a rapid fifty off 28 balls.

Needing 13 runs in the last over, Raza remained composed, concluding the match with a four and a six, securing the victory with one ball to spare.
