Markram Honored as ICC Men’s Player of the Month

Aiden Markram has been recognized as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for June 2025, owing to his pivotal all-round display in the ICC World Test Championship Final versus Australia at Lord’s.

The 30-year-old South African opening batsman was instrumental in helping the Proteas bring to an end their 27-year drought for a major ICC title. He achieved this by recording a superb 136 in the final innings and taking two significant wickets, which led to a memorable triumph.

Markram expressed that receiving the award was a “privilege,” and conveyed his pride in adding to a significant occasion in South African cricket.

Upon receiving the award, Markram stated, “It is a privilege to receive this award. Contributing to an ICC World Test Championship victory for our team and South Africa holds immense significance for me.”

“Securing the final at Lord’s represents a historic moment for South African cricket, one that will be etched in our memories forever. This victory was made achievable through the joint efforts of the entire team, particularly with vital contributions from KG (Kagiso Rabada) and Tembs (Temba Bavuma).”

The right-handed batter’s impact on the match commenced with his bowling, as he disrupted a potentially game-changing partnership between Steve Smith and Beau Webster, dismissing Smith with his sixth ball.

Despite being dismissed for zero in the initial innings, he staged an impressive recovery in the subsequent innings.

With South Africa trailing by 74 runs and Australia having formed a crucial 59-run partnership for the 10th wicket, the Proteas faced significant strain.

Markram ended Australia’s innings by dismissing Josh Hazlewood and then led the batting charge in the difficult pursuit of 282.

Despite the early setback of losing Ryan Rickelton, Markram demonstrated composure and command, building vital partnerships with Wiaan Mulder and captain Temba Bavuma.

When Bavuma sustained a minor injury during the innings, Markram’s encouragement was essential in maintaining the team’s focus on the chase.

He was eventually dismissed for a magnificent 136, an innings distinguished by resilience, elegance, and match awareness, steering South Africa to their first-ever ICC World Test Championship title.
