DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed the contenders for the men’s player of the month award for June 2025. South Africa’s Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada are nominated alongside Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka, all recognized for their outstanding displays in Test cricket.
Markram’s Key Role in WTC Final
Markram was instrumental in South Africa’s momentous ICC World Test Championship Final victory against Australia, aiding his team in claiming their first ICC men’s trophy in 27 years.
Contributions with Bat and Ball
Markram made valuable contributions on both fronts. He disrupted a crucial partnership by dismissing Steve Smith early on with his part-time off-spin and later took the wicket of Josh Hazlewood.
His second-innings batting performance was particularly noteworthy. While chasing 282, Markram solidified the innings with a superb 136, steering South Africa to a memorable five-wicket triumph at Lord’s.
Rabada’s Pace Attack Proves Decisive
Rabada’s dynamic pace attack played a vital role in South Africa’s win. On a pitch that presented varied conditions throughout the five days, the seasoned pacer secured a five-wicket haul in the initial innings.
He concluded the match with a total of nine wickets and currently holds the fourth position on South Africa’s all-time Test wicket-takers list with 336 wickets.
Nissanka Shines in Sri Lanka’s Series Win
Nissanka made a significant impact in Sri Lanka’s Test series victory over Bangladesh, commencing the new ICC World Test Championship cycle impressively.
During the first Test in Galle, Nissanka achieved a career-best score of 187 in response to Bangladesh’s 495. His innings featured 24 boundaries and one six, helping Sri Lanka reduce the deficit and secure a draw.
He continued his form with another century in the second Test, scoring 158 with 19 boundaries.
