Isak Transfers to Liverpool Following Disagreement with Newcastle

Alexander Isak has officially joined Liverpool on a long-term contract following a drawn-out transfer period. Newcastle United’s manager, Eddie Howe, mentioned that his relationship with Isak was strained after the player took actions to expedite his move to Liverpool.

The transfer of Isak to Liverpool was finalized on the deadline day, bringing to a close extensive speculation regarding his future. Newcastle reportedly accepted a bid of £125 million for the Swedish international on September 1, having previously turned down an offer of £110 million including potential add-ons.

Isak’s absence from Newcastle’s pre-season tour in Asia was attributed by the club to a minor thigh injury. He had not participated in any matches this season, training separately due to the Liverpool rumors. After Liverpool’s first offer was rejected, Isak reportedly declined to rejoin the Newcastle team and released a statement asserting that the club had reneged on promises and that their relationship was untenable.

In response, the club stated that no official had ever guaranteed Isak’s departure during the summer transfer window.

Days after his transfer, Isak addressed the media following Sweden’s 2-0 defeat to Kosovo in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, noting that the full context of the situation was not widely understood, adding it was a matter for another time.

Howe commented on his relationship with Isak, mentioning that it was positive until Isak’s actions to force a move. “Alex and I always enjoyed a great relationship,” he stated.

“I valued our time working together, and I hope he felt the same. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement. We supported his development into the player he is today, and he contributed to our team’s significant achievements and success.”

“However, the moment he took actions to leave, our relationship shifted, marking a turning point.”

Alexander Isak, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 for £60 million, scored 27 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions last season.
