Kaushal Silva Appointed as Hong Kong Head Coach

Cricket Hong Kong, China (CHK) formally announced on Monday the appointment of Kaushal Silva, the former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper and batter, as the head coach for their men’s cricket team.

Silva, who played 39 Test matches for Sri Lanka during his seven-year career, is a certified Level III coach with accreditation from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

After ending his playing career in 2018, the 39-year-old began coaching in Sri Lanka. He also had a brief period in England and has been coaching in Australia since 2019.

Upon his appointment, Silva expressed his enthusiasm and pledged to support the expansion of Hong Kong Cricket, citing its considerable potential.

He further stated that he would focus on developing a winning attitude among experienced players and fostering new talent.

Silva stated in a statement released by CHK, “I am thrilled to be joining Cricket Hong Kong, China, and I am excited to work with the talented players here.”

“Hong Kong Cricket possesses a wealth of potential, and I am eager to help the team achieve growth and success on the international stage.

“My main goal will be to establish a strong work ethic and a winning attitude within the senior team while also identifying and developing new talent for long-term growth.”

Kaushal Silva’s initial task as Hong Kong’s head coach will be the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28.

The next edition of the continental tournament will use the T20 format as a preparation event for the T20 World Cup 2026, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host in February.

Eight teams, split into two groups, will compete for the title. Group A includes rivals Pakistan and India, along with the UAE and Oman, while Group B consists of Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong.

Hong Kong will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on September 9 against Afghanistan, followed by a match against Bangladesh on September 11. Their last group-stage game will be against Sri Lanka on September 15.
