Naqvi Pledges Support for Hockey Team, Announces Rewards
Federal Interior Minister and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi affirmed his unwavering support for the Pakistan hockey team and its captain, Ammad Butt, on Monday. He pledged to ensure the team’s participation in the upcoming Pro Hockey League.
During their discussion, Butt updated Naqvi on critical issues surrounding the resurgence of hockey in Pakistan, along with the team’s preparations for the league. They also addressed player welfare and rehabilitation.
Naqvi hailed the national team’s qualification for the Pro Hockey League as an honor. He guaranteed that he would proactively facilitate their participation.
A reward of PKR one million per player was declared by Naqvi, who also promised the swift resolution of any visa complications.
The PCB’s expert medical staff will oversee the players’ health and fitness needs, while the logistics division will guarantee the provision of all essential support and resources.
Ammad Butt also used the meeting to congratulate Naqvi on being awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz.
Earlier in the month, the PHF made a significant decision concerning involvement in the Pro Hockey League, suggesting to the government and the PSB that no funds allocated for the Pro League should go directly to the PHF.
PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid stated that the Pro League requires PKR 700 million, and the federation does not need direct funding. He suggested that the PSB should handle the event fees.
Rana Mujahid emphasized that what truly matters is the Pro League, whether funds come from the Hockey Federation or the PSB, as it’s crucial for Pakistan hockey.
He further added that player allowances should be directly disbursed, and the PSB should manage all arrangements, including booking travel and accommodations.
“Our sole objective is to improve the national sport and address player-related concerns,” he stated.
The PHF secretary also noted that participation in the Pro League will not only sharpen players’ abilities but also elevate Pakistan’s global standing.
Earlier this week, PHF President Tariq Bugti revealed that the federation had requested an extension from the FIH to confirm participation in the Pro League.
The FIH had formally invited Pakistan to participate in the Pro League after New Zealand withdrew, despite winning the Nations Cup. The PHF was given until August 12 to respond.
