Heavy Rainfall Hits Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Flood Warning Issued
On Tuesday, Rawalpindi and Islamabad experienced significant rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) stated that rainfall has exceeded 65mm and has predicted further rain in the coming days.
The downpour, which started early Tuesday morning, has been intermittent, resulting in a welcome decrease in humidity and relief from the high temperatures.
The Met Office reported that the twin cities received 65mm of rain. Bokra in Rawalpindi recorded 64mm, Pir Wadhai received 50mm, Shamsabad saw 54mm, and Saidpur in Islamabad experienced 52mm of rainfall.
Responding to the heavy rainfall, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has declared a rain emergency in Rawalpindi. To manage potential water accumulation and urban flooding, emergency teams and machinery have been dispatched to vulnerable, low-lying regions.
WASA also indicated that the water level in Nullah Lai had risen to 10 feet at Katarian and 9 feet at Gawalmandi.
The PMD has issued a forecast of more rain in Rawalpindi throughout the week and has advised both authorities and residents to exercise caution.
Heavy rain and strong winds were also reported in Kotli and nearby areas of Azad Kashmir.
Furthermore, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) announced that the monsoon season has begun in the province, with the initial spell expected to continue until July 1. Areas including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiat, Attock, Gujarat, Jhelum, and Gujranwala are expected to experience rain and strong winds. Showers are also anticipated in Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Bahawalpur in South Punjab.
