Barcelona Faces Registration Challenges Ahead of La Liga Opener
Reports from international media indicate that Barcelona’s coach, Hansi Flick, remains optimistic about registering essential players before their La Liga debut match against Mallorca on Saturday. The club has been facing difficulties in registering players due to La Liga’s stringent financial regulations.
These regulations have been imposed because Barcelona’s spending on acquisitions and salaries has exceeded their revenue for several seasons. Flick has expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation but conveyed confidence that solutions will be found before the La Liga opener.
“You can imagine I’m not pleased with the current circumstances. However, I am aware of the situation, and I have faith in the club,” Flick stated. “We must remain patient until tomorrow. A similar scenario occurred last season.”
“Our focus will be on the aspects we can influence. Regarding the other matters, I trust in the club’s ability to handle them.”
This summer, Barcelona has brought in Joan Garcia from Espanyol, secured an extension with Wojciech Szczesny, and acquired Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United. However, none of these players have been officially registered yet.
The registration issue has seen some resolution through internal adjustments, particularly involving captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Initially, the club proposed that Ter Stegen take a long-term medical leave, which would free up 80% of his wages until mid-season, aiding compliance with La Liga’s Financial Fair Play rules. However, he initially declined this arrangement.
After undergoing surgery and being sidelined for a minimum of three months, Ter Stegen was temporarily relieved of his captaincy, which was later reinstated upon his agreement to the deal.
Hansi Flick commented on Ter Stegen’s situation, noting the dialogue between the club and the player. “The most crucial aspect is open communication among everyone. Marc and the club engaged in discussions,” Flick said. “The priority for me, Marc, and the club is his recovery.”
“He has consistently demonstrated his exceptional goalkeeping abilities over the years, and his return to playing condition is vital. We are fully supportive and will assist him in every possible way.”
Inigo Martinez’s transfer to Al-Nassr has also created significant salary cap relief, freeing up €14 million. Still, Barcelona needs to further reduce its wage bill to meet La Liga’s imposed limits.
Flick shared his mixed feelings about Martinez’s departure, acknowledging his vital role in the central defense. “I was somewhat taken aback but completely understood his decision. I’m disappointed to see him leave, as he is an outstanding player with a strong character,” Flick remarked. “He was a key leader, contributing significantly both on the field and in the locker room. He deserves this opportunity, and I wish him the very best.”
