De Bruyne to be Immortalized with Statue Outside Etihad Stadium
MANCHESTER: After a decade of outstanding service, Kevin De Bruyne’s time with Manchester City concluded at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. Manager Pep Guardiola gave an emotional farewell, visibly moved by the occasion.
Manchester City secured a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in a significant Premier League match, solidifying their position in the top three. However, the focus shifted to De Bruyne following what was his final appearance for the club.
A video tribute was presented after the game, showcasing messages from former teammates such as Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, Fernandinho, Vincent Kompany, Joe Hart, and Leroy Sane, all expressing their best wishes to the departing midfielder.
Aguero stated, “Congratulations on your career; it was an honor to share the field with you. I wish you the very best, my friend. You are undoubtedly a Manchester City legend. See you, bro.”
De Bruyne had previously announced his departure last month, confirming he would leave the club upon the expiration of his contract at the season’s end.
Guardiola conveyed his sentiments, expressing how much De Bruyne would be missed and praising his performance in the match.
“It’s a somber day, and his absence will be felt,” Guardiola commented.
“Yet, it was also a wonderful day for him to once again contribute to a victory of great importance.”
When asked if De Bruyne was irreplaceable, Guardiola affirmed this, emphasizing the player’s lasting impact on the club.
Guardiola noted, “Some players are truly irreplaceable; replicating what they bring is incredibly challenging. It’s not solely about goals, assists, or remarkable plays. It’s about the connection, the style of play, and the sustained contribution that endears them to the club’s supporters.”
Following the match, the club revealed their plans to honor De Bruyne by erecting a statue in his likeness outside the Etihad Stadium.
