Government to Streamline Net-Metering Connections with Online Portal

The government is set to modernize the application process for new net-metering connections by launching a comprehensive online portal. The aim is to simplify and digitize the entire procedure.

Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari presided over a meeting on Monday to assess the current system for providing net-metering connections, according to an official statement from the ministry.

The minister emphasized the need to address existing challenges promptly, stating that “Immediate and effective solutions must be found for the issues faced in this process.”

He further stressed the importance of making the application process “simple, transparent, and user-friendly” for all new applicants.

To ensure smooth implementation, electricity distribution companies will provide their staff with “necessary training regarding the new portal and that practical demonstrations also be conducted”.

An awareness initiative will also be launched to educate electricity consumers about the benefits of the portal and how it ensures transparency.

Earlier in the year, the government initially revealed plans to decrease the buyback rate for net metering electricity to Rs10 per unit, down from Rs27 per unit. The reasoning behind this adjustment was attributed to the “significant increase in the number of solar net-metering consumers, with associated financial implications for grid consumers”.

However, following opposition, the government chose to expand consultations on the Solar Net Metering Regulations, previously approved by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). The recommendations will be resubmitted to the federal cabinet after gathering further input from relevant stakeholders.
