Pakistan to Import Sugar to Stabilize Prices
To ensure stable pricing, Pakistan intends to import 500,000 metric tons of sugar, according to the Ministry of National Food Security on Tuesday.
A statement from the ministry indicated that the federal cabinet has sanctioned the import of sugar via the public sector.
This action aligns with Pakistan’s pattern of alternating between exporting surplus stocks and importing to address shortages that cause price volatility.
Approval of Sugar Import
Market observers have noted a surge in retail sugar costs, reaching 200 rupees per kilogram, a notable increase from 130 rupees in January.
According to reports from local media, the government authorized the export of 250,000 tons of sugar the previous year.
