Munsey Surpasses MacLeod’s Long-Standing Record

DUNDEE: George Munsey, the Scottish top-order batsman, etched his name in the record books on Thursday by achieving the highest individual score in ODIs by a player from an associate nation.

The left-handed opening batsman reached this remarkable feat with a stunning innings of 191 against the Netherlands. This occurred during the 78th match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, held at Forthill.

Munsey faced 150 balls, striking 14 boundaries and clearing the ropes for 11 sixes. In doing so, he overtook the previous record held by fellow countryman Calum MacLeod since 2014.

Highest Scores by an Associate Batter in ODIs:
  • 191 – George Munsey (SCO) vs NED, Dundee, 2025
  • 175 – Calum MacLeod (SCO) vs CAN, Christchurch, 2014
  • 173* – Jaskaran Malhotra (USA) vs PNG, Al Amerat, 2021
  • 157* – Calum MacLeod (SCO) vs AFG, Bulawayo, 2018
  • 156 – Kyle Coetzer (SCO) vs BAN, Nelson, 2015

The 32-year-old’s innings concluded in a painful manner, as he was bowled by Vivian Kingma in the second-to-last over, just nine runs short of a double century.

His record-breaking performance, along with a half-century from captain Matthew Cross lower down the order, propelled Scotland to a total of 369/6, their third-highest ever in this format.

It is worth noting that Scotland’s highest ODI total was also against the Netherlands, when they scored 380/9 last month. Their highest score against a full-member ICC nation was against England in 2018.

In pursuit of the significant 370-run target, opener Max O’Dowd has so far kept the Netherlands competitive. At the time of reporting, the visiting team had reached 209/4 in 31 overs.
