FIH Awaits Official Word from Hockey New Zealand, Pakistan’s Participation in Pro League Uncertain

While Pakistani officials assert ongoing communication between the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and the International Hockey Federation (FIH) concerning potential participation in the FIH Pro League, a representative from FIH has indicated that no official invitation has been issued to any team to substitute New Zealand at this juncture.

During a media briefing on Thursday, the PHF secretary, along with Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) representatives, addressed the possibility of Pakistan’s involvement in the Pro League and the associated financial requirements. He stated that the PHF maintains contact with the FIH regarding the matter.

The FIH communicated that the organization has not yet reached the point of extending an invitation to the Nations Cup runner-up for Pro League inclusion.

FIH Senior Communications Manager Nicolas Maingot refuted claims of Pakistan receiving an invitation to the tournament, labeling them as “untrue.”

Maingot clarified the procedure: “The Nations Cup winner is offered the chance to participate in the Pro League the following season. Should that team decline, the opportunity is then extended to the runner-up.”

The FIH spokesperson emphasized, “Currently, we are not at that stage.”

Maingot had previously confirmed that the FIH is still awaiting an update from New Zealand regarding their decision.

In an email, he noted, “As of Wednesday evening, we have not yet obtained Hockey New Zealand’s official position.”

Reports suggest that funding reductions from the government might impede New Zealand’s participation in the FIH Pro League, mirroring their withdrawal from the previous edition.

It is believed that while a formal invitation remains unconfirmed, initial discussions may have occurred at the leadership level to assess Pakistan’s preparedness should New Zealand opt out.

Rana Mujahid, the secretary of the Pakistan Hockey Federation, affirmed in a statement that the FIH has inquired about Pakistan’s availability should New Zealand withdraw.

“FIH asked us if we would be available and we have replied positively, while we are discussing our possibilities, we have also sought a response from FIH on New Zealand’s final stance on the matter so that we can be in position to make any decision on this,” he stated.
