Sahibzada Farhan Aims for Pakistan Team Comeback After PSL Success

KARACHI: Islamabad United’s opening batsman, Sahibzada Farhan, has his sights set on a return to the Pakistan national team, aiming for a sustained international presence driven by his impressive performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and National T20 tournaments.

In a recent discussion, the 29-year-old expressed that his primary objective is to solidify a lasting position within the national squad, rather than just a fleeting opportunity.

“My ambition is to represent Pakistan once more and maintain a long-term presence in the team, not merely play a match or two,” Farhan stated. “Upon my return, I intend to secure my place and not just make a short visit.”

Farhan attributed his strong showing in the recent National T20 Cup, where he achieved three centuries and a pair of fifties, to boosting his confidence leading into the PSL.

“Achieving a century early in the National T20 provided a significant confidence boost,” he mentioned. “My strategy was to dominate that competition to attract attention for PSL selection, and fortunately, that form has continued.”

Despite initially being overlooked by PSL franchises during the draft in January, Farhan’s subsequent performance of 605 runs in seven innings in the National T20 tournament, featuring three centuries and two half-centuries, convinced Islamabad United to select him in the supplementary category.

Farhan believes his consistency in the PSL should dispel any doubts from critics who previously labeled him as a performer suited only for domestic cricket.

“People used to suggest that I only perform well in domestic cricket, but I have disproven that in the PSL,” Farhan asserted. “Performing in such a prestigious league significantly strengthens my case for international selection.”

Sahibzada Farhan underscored the importance of PSL performances in facilitating the transition to international cricket.

“The intensity of competition here is high; facing top bowlers in the PSL prepares you for the pressures of representing Pakistan in international cricket,” he explained. “If you excel here, adapting to the international level becomes more manageable.”

He also highlighted the intense competition for opening positions in Pakistan’s batting lineup.

“There are several talented openers, so consistent performances are essential to earn and keep your spot,” he noted. “A player should not be judged based on just a couple of matches; they need a fair opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities.”

Farhan acknowledged the support he receives from Islamabad United’s management, particularly captain Salman Agha, in refining his technique.

“After the initial match, Salman provided valuable advice that helped me improve my balance and play on the on-side,” he disclosed. “Now, I am scoring more freely in that area.”

He also expressed gratitude to his academy coaches for aiding his development as a batsman. “Minor adjustments can make a substantial difference, and I am continuously working to improve,” he added.

Farhan, recognized for his aggressive batting style, emphasized his dissatisfaction with just a few good innings.

“I cannot afford to relax after just one or two performances; I always strive for more,” he stated. “My goal is to score at least one or two more centuries in this PSL season and contribute to my team’s success.” Farhan is currently the leading run-scorer in PSL 10 with 184 runs in three innings.

Reflecting on the challenges of T20 batting, he highlighted the significance of adaptability. “In T20s, your batting position greatly influences your approach—I prefer opening as it allows me time to construct an innings. While you have more time to adjust in ODIs and T20s, you still need to be proactive.”

Farhan acknowledged that international cricket involves intense scrutiny but affirmed his readiness for the challenge. “There is considerable pressure at the highest level, but I have learned to embrace it,” he said. “My philosophy is simple: focus on what you can control, work diligently, and let your performances speak for themselves.”

As Islamabad United continues to perform strongly in PSL X, Farhan remains focused on maintaining his form. “I am enjoying my batting at the moment, and I am committed to continuing to contribute. If I maintain my performance, the rest will take care of itself.”
