Yamin Backs Afridi’s Test Selection Against South Africa
Former Pakistani fast bowler Amir Yamin has voiced his support for the inclusion of uncapped spinner Asif Afridi in Pakistan’s squad for the forthcoming two-match Test series against South Africa. The series is slated to commence on October 12 in Lahore.
Yamin used social media to defend Afridi’s selection, applauding the left-arm spinner’s consistent displays in domestic cricket.
“Asif Afridi’s dedication has been rewarded – he’s earned this. A player who consistently participates in and excels in first-class cricket is deserving of a spot in any format,” Yamin stated.
The 35-year-old also responded to critics questioning Afridi’s selection, pointing out their lack of understanding of the sport.
“Those who criticise are often unfamiliar with cricket. Experiencing the intensity on the field would give them a true understanding of the game,” he added.
Interim red-ball head coach Azhar Mahmood recently supported Afridi, emphasizing his impressive domestic record and the reasoning behind his selection.
“He is an integral part of our 16-member team. We initially announced 18 players, which was then narrowed down to 16, so he’s certainly not just a net bowler,” Mahmood clarified.
“I don’t see the basis for the objections. His performance over the last couple of years speaks for itself: 53 wickets last year and 27 this year. A bowler with 80 domestic wickets undoubtedly warrants an opportunity. Age is irrelevant; the ability to secure 20 wickets in a match is what counts, and Asif is a talented bowler with a promising future,” he further added.
The left-arm spinner, representing the FATA Region in domestic cricket, boasts a notable first-class record: 198 wickets in 57 matches at a 2.92 economy rate, including 13 five-wicket hauls and two ten-wicket match hauls.
Afridi was also a top performer in the Hanif Mohammad Trophy 2025-26, leading the wicket-takers with 33 wickets in five matches at a 2.33 economy rate.
The upcoming series is particularly significant as international cricket returns to Faisalabad after 17 years, marking the beginning of Pakistan’s new World Test Championship (WTC) campaign.
The first Test match will be held at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore (October 12–16), and the second Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium (October 20–24).
This series marks South Africa’s first Test series in Pakistan since January 2021, where the home team won 2-0.
Following the Test matches, both teams will engage in a three-match T20I series (October 28–November 1) and a three-match ODI series (November 4–8).
