Pathan Highlights Communication Needs for Veteran Cricketers’ Future
Irfan Pathan, the former Indian all-rounder, emphasized on Friday the importance of consistent communication from team management regarding the path forward for experienced players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Mohammed Shami. He noted the challenges these athletes face in maintaining their fitness and securing regular playtime as they aim to participate in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
In a discussion with the Indian media, Pathan mentioned that, despite their extensive experience and demonstrated capabilities, the crucial element for the trio in the coming years will be the consistency of playing competitive cricket.
“They are all exceptional players. Their main challenge revolves around consistent play and maintaining peak fitness. Virat will likely participate in the IPL and some first-class matches, focusing on playing rather than proving his worth,” Pathan elaborated.
He voiced his confidence in the transparency of head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar concerning their strategies. However, he cautioned that significant gaps between competitive matches could negatively impact their performance.
“Sustaining consistent game time will present difficulties. With the rise of T20 cricket, one-day matches have become less frequent, altering the match volume in both formats. Managing game time continuity is crucial; otherwise, World Cup 2027 will pose a significant challenge, leading to increased pressure,” he stated.
Pathan acknowledged fitness as an ongoing concern but stressed the unwavering commitment of the senior players.
“I discussed fitness with Rohit, and he is highly motivated. Virat, as we’ve seen, is diligently training in England, and Shami has expressed his eagerness. This enthusiasm is vital, signaling their dedication to maintaining their fitness levels,” he added.
The former all-rounder reiterated the significance of transparent dialogue from the team management about the veterans’ roles moving forward.
“Breaks in continuity, such as extended periods between international games—for example, a few ODIs against Australia followed only by the IPL—can be disruptive. Overcoming this will be a key challenge,” he concluded.
