Basit Ali Criticizes Broadcasters Ahead of Asia Cup 2025

Former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali has voiced concerns regarding the commercial priorities overshadowing cricket, particularly focusing on broadcasters’ potential profits ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to commence on September 9.

In a statement made on his YouTube channel, Ali suggested that the primary financial gain from the Asia Cup would go to the broadcasting companies, rather than the participating cricket teams.

He emphasized the increasing commercialization evident in global franchise leagues, where financial considerations frequently take precedence over the essence of the sport. Ali anticipates a parallel dynamic during the Asia Cup 2025.

“Regrettably, cricket is evolving into a business-driven venture. Across various franchise leagues globally, financial interests are often prioritised over the sport itself,” Basit commented.

“A similar trend is anticipated for this Asia Cup. The main beneficiaries will be the broadcasters, not necessarily Pakistan, India, or Sri Lanka,” he further stated.

The announcement of a match between India and Pakistan has elicited varied reactions, especially given the existing geopolitical tensions between the two countries.

Despite the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) securing approval from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for the match, some former cricketers and fans have expressed disapproval.

The eight-team competition is set to begin on September 9 with a match between Afghanistan and Hong Kong.

Pakistan is scheduled to commence its campaign against Oman on September 12, followed by the highly anticipated match against India two days later. Their final group stage match is against the UAE on September 17.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super Four stage, raising the possibility of another match between Pakistan and India on September 21.

The two leading teams from the Super Four stage will then compete in the final, scheduled for September 28.
