Atherton Highlights Crucial Test for Stokes’ Leadership in Upcoming Test
LONDON: Michael Atherton, the former England captain, has identified the upcoming third Test against India, commencing on July 10, as a critical juncture in Ben Stokes’ captaincy. He emphasized the significance of Stokes’ ability to galvanize his team after their recent setback.
In a recent piece, Atherton pinpointed the period leading up to the third Test at Lord’s as a stern examination of Stokes’ leadership qualities, character, and overall resilience.
“During Ben Stokes’ tenure as England captain, the challenges he faces in preparing his team for the third Test at Lord’s are among the most significant. It will be a substantial assessment of his leadership abilities, as well as his own mental and physical fortitude,” Atherton commented.
Atherton drew attention to the psychological impact of the loss and referenced Stokes’ previous statements after England’s victory at Leeds.
Atherton pointed out that the same recuperation period is essential, not just for Stokes, but for the entire team to regain focus.
“The gap between the first and second Tests was a week. The three days Stokes dedicated to isolating himself after Leeds to recover are now the days he needs to use to motivate his players,” he noted.
“Given his fatigue after the win at Leeds with a week’s break, his state of mind with the Lord’s Test only three days away must be considerable.”
Atherton also suggested alterations to the England XI, particularly concerning the pace bowling options.
“I would maintain confidence in the batting lineup but introduce fresh energy into the seam attack, potentially replacing Josh Tongue and Brydon Carse with Archer and Atkinson,” he proposed.
Notably, the five-Test series between India and England is currently level at 1-1, with the third Test scheduled to begin at Lord’s on July 11.
