Gus Atkinson Doubtful for First Test Against India Due to Hamstring Strain
Gus Atkinson, a key fast bowler for England, is in danger of missing the first Test match against India, scheduled to commence at Headingley. Reports indicate he has suffered a right hamstring strain.
Sources reveal that Atkinson sustained the injury during England’s recent one-off Test match against Zimbabwe. Consequently, he was absent from the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies.
Initially, there were positive expectations regarding his participation in the series opener on June 20. However, current indications suggest that he is still facing challenges in fully recovering his fitness.
This potential absence exacerbates England’s existing injury concerns among their seam bowlers. Mark Wood and Olly Stone are already sidelined, and Jofra Archer’s comeback to red-ball cricket has been postponed due to a thumb injury.
In a positive update, Chris Woakes is reportedly making steady progress in his recovery from an ankle injury. He is anticipated to play for England Lions in their upcoming match against India A this week.
Brydon Carse, having recently recovered from a foot injury, has returned to action in the ODI series against the West Indies.
Should Atkinson be unavailable, other bowlers may be considered to fill the void. Sam Cook from Essex, who made his debut during the Zimbabwe Test, and Matthew Potts from Durham are potential candidates.
Josh Tongue of Nottinghamshire, who made a noteworthy impact with two wickets against Zimbabwe, may also be included in the Lions squad to play India A, ensuring he maintains his match fitness.
Since his Test debut last summer, the 27-year-old has become an integral part of England’s bowling attack, especially after the retirements of Stuart Broad and James Anderson. He has participated in 12 of England’s 13 Tests, securing 55 wickets, which is the highest among all bowlers globally during that period.
